ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I simply cannot remember a time when I didn’t paint. The visual world has always meant a great deal to me, particularly in terms of light and colour. I am very much aware of my immediate surroundings and it is often within the home that I find my subject matter. I really don’t feel the need to go in search of subjects; they are all around me, wherever I happen to be; in the home, restaurant, or concert hall. I am particularly attracted to ordinary subject matter, which when bathed in a sympathetic light, becomes extraordinary.
But I also enjoy being out in the landscape and responding to it in terms of colour and light. My landscapes, like my interiors, are intimate, not vast open spaces. By bringing the subject towards the picture plane I seek a close and very personal relationship with nature. I am more concerned with my feelings about the subject than with topographical description.
Far more important to me than subject matter, are the abstract qualities of the painting itself. I am preoccupied with colour, light and space and the relationships of these qualities. Although the subject matter through light and colour may inspire me, in the end it is my emotional response to the paint itself that is all important. Much of my work begins with a quick drawing, an immediate response to the thing seen, and the painting develops from this, memory and imagination playing an important part. I never have a very positive idea about how the final painting will look. As soon as I make a mark, or place a colour, then the painting has its own life and makes its own demands. It is my concern as a painter to respond to these demands.
We really do live in a very beautiful world and I strive to record the way I see it, and the way I feel about it.
